Books Students are Reading

By: Kaylin Gartland, Faith Benson, Jayson Reyes, David Mackie, and James Cefalo

A fellow seventh grade student named Jorvy read a book called The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. It takes place at the Montparnasse railway station in 1930s Paris. Jorvy says the book was about a kid named Hugo who lives in the train station. His parents are dead so he lives with his uncle but he almost gets sent to an orphanage. The police catch him stealing from a toy store. He was stealing gears. He finds the girl who catches him and tells her dad (the shopkeeper) about the automaton.  After the house fire it was sent to a museum and the automaton draws a picture of a bullet going to the moon which is unusual. The automaton signs the shopkeeper's name which was also very strange. The main characters are Hugo Cabret, Isabelle Etienne, Mama Jean, and George Melies. Jorvy says his favorite part was when the machine stopped working for 30 seconds and Hugo hits his head on the wall and almost started to cry. Jorvy’s favorite character is Isabelle's grandmother and his least favorite character/part is the movie guy that kicks Hugo and Isabelle out the movie theater. Overall he loved the book.

Another fellow seventh grade student named Liam N. read the book

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen which takes place in Netherfield Park, Rosings Park, and Pemberley, England. Liam says the book was about a girl named Isabella from a middle class family. She is being courted by  five different people which include: Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy, and  Mr. Wickham. She does not like Mr. Darcy because he cheated Mr. Wickham out of a large sum of money that is rightfully his. So Isabella plans to trick Mr. Darcy to get the money back. And so, Charlotte (Isabella’s friend ) tricks Mr. Darcy into marrying her instead of Isabella. Finally, Isabella swindles Mr. Darcy out of the money that he stole from Mr.Wickham and Isabella marries no one. Liam says that his favorite part was when Charlotte tricks Mr. Collins into marrying her instead of Isabella because she does not want to marry him. Liam says Pride and Prejudice is a good book but is also a very hard read.
