In response to concerns over safety and traffic congestion around Hillside Middle School during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, the District administration has worked with the school and the Department of Public Works to identify solutions.
Please read this message carefully. Based on recommendations from Public Works, we will implement the following changes effective Monday, March 3, when we return from February vacation. As we implement these changes, we will continue to monitor the situation closely along with the city.
Here are details of the changes being put into place:
New crossing guard: The district will work to hire a new crossing guard for the intersection of Reservoir Avenue and Belmont Street to ensure students can safely cross without impeding traffic. Anyone interested in this crossing guard position can apply at https://mansd.schoolspring.com/.
No parking areas: The city will extend no-parking areas eastward on Reservoir Avenue to allow for more queueing at drop-off and pick-up times. Signs are being installed this week.
Active loading area: The area directly in front of the school on Reservoir Avenue will be designated the active loading area for dropping off and picking up students.
Morning drop-off: Families should not drop off students at the intersection of Reservoir and Belmont, as this causes additional traffic congestion. All families dropping off students should use the active loading area in front of the school. As soon as students are safely on the sidewalk, drivers should depart immediately.
Afternoon pick-up: Families must arrive no earlier than 2 p.m. to pick up students, and should use the active pick-up area in front of the school. Buses will now be directed behind the building for loading instead of on Reservoir Avenue, freeing the space for the active loading area. Traffic will be stopped to allow the buses to depart the property.
We appreciate your understanding and participation as we work to implement these changes.
